The Moscow Mule gets a tropical update with the Island Mule, the best-selling drink at our lounge. It follows the classic mule formula—lime, ginger beer, and a copper mug—but swaps vodka for Kavahol, a non-alcoholic kava spirit with a spicy ginger bite and a relaxed effect you can actually feel. It’s grounding, bitter, and has that signature kava mouth-tingle, offering a real buzz without alcohol.
We add pineapple juice and passionfruit syrup for bright, fruity flavor, and finish it with a few dashes of our non-alcoholic Aromatic bitters to tie it all together. It drinks like a proper cocktail—sharp, balanced, and refreshing—with just enough tropical fun to keep things lively. Garnish with a mint sprig and lime wheel right in the middle, like a little tree on an island.
Kavahol is our top-selling spirit at the ATB Zero Proof Market, and this is the drink people come back for again and again.
Add all ingredients, except ginger, to a shaker tin with ice and shake until chilled.
Strain into a copper mug filled with ice, top with ginger beer, and stir.
Garnish with a lime wheel and mint bouquet.
Recipe Note
ABOUT OUR AROMATIC BITTERS All The Bitter Aromatic Bitters add complexity and structure to this drink, with flavors of warm spice, bitter roots, and ginger that play well with the sharpness of kava and the brightness of the fruit.
WHAT IS KAVAHOL? Kavahol is a non-alcoholic spirit made from kava root, known for its calming and euphoric properties. Compared to adaptogen drinks, which are more subtle and build over time, kava drinks tend to work quickly—you’ll often feel the effect after just one.
WHAT IS A KAVA BUZZ LIKE? Think of it like the feeling you get after your first drink—that warm, slightly tingly “ooh, I had a drink” moment. It’s calming, uplifting, and makes you feel relaxed and social without crossing into intoxication. There’s no drunk texting, no stumbling around—just a light, happy buzz that stays in a good place.
CAN EVERYONE HAVE KAVA? While kava is generally well-tolerated, it’s not for everyone. It’s not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and may interact with medications that affect the liver or central nervous system—like benzodiazepines, antidepressants, or sleep aids. If you're in recovery, kava might not be the right fit, depending on your goals and program. As always, check with your doctor if you’re unsure.
